2014 Revelation Film Festival picks

Added on by Kenta McGrath.

Rev is back for another year and here are my humble recommendations. I'm glad to see the Iranian film showcase making a return and I look forward to seeing a couple of lesser known Australian features, namely, Jason Sweeney's The Dead Speak Back and Samantha Rebillet's The Last Goodbye. Also not to be missed are Ms Death and Jamie Leonarder's screening of their archive, The Mu-Mesons 16mm Showdown; the animation and experimental film showcases (I was on the selection panel for the latter and it includes one of the best films I've seen all year); and two key, restored films, Bahram Beyzai's Ragbar and Tobe Hooper's Texas Chainsaw Massacre (although the latter is one of the few films I can imagine benefitting from not being restored too much). Here are my ten film picks, in alphabetical order:

American Arab (Usama Alshaibi)

Concrete Night (Pirjo Honkasalo)

The Congress (Ari Folman)

The Dead Speak Back (Jason Sweeney)

Parviz (Majid Barzegar)

Purgatorio (Rodrigo Reyes)

Ragbar / Downpour (Bahram Beizai)

Under the Skin (Jonathan Glazer)

Wakolda / The German Doctor (Lucía Puenzo)

Wetlands (David Wnendt)
