Unrequited Love as Viewed from Above
2010 • 9 mins • video installation
Traffic at a congested city intersection comes to a standstill as pedestrians stop and stare at a young woman in red, striding confidently across the concrete. She eventually disappears from view; heads turn back, traffic regains its pace, life continues.
A video installation created for the City of Perth/Foodchain In Transit exhibition and projected (without sound) at the Wellington Street Bus Terminal in Perth between 19 July – 1 August 2010. Other artists included Lisa Businovski, Mat de Koning and Steve Berrick.
Note
The work is a simple montage using photographs taken at a congested traffic intersection in Hanoi, Vietnam. I was on a cafe balcony, several floors above, when I accidentally photographed a pedestrian in such a way that she appeared to be walking through a vast, empty lot. I returned a few more times to take hundreds of similar photographs of other pedestrians, and edited them together to make it appear as though they were all staring at the original woman in red.
